The Interpreter of Maladies pub piece
The story
“The interpreter of Maladies”, by Jhumpa Lahiri, is a work of post modernism
because of how the two main characters view the world versus the truth behind
reality. Mrs. Das believed that if she just confessed her wrong doings to Mr.
Kapasi that everything will be forgiven. This goes both ways as Mr. Kapasi
believed that he could he could escape his life failures and find happiness in
Mrs. Das. His marriage is falling apart because his wife blames him for the
death of their child, he never pursued his dream career, and he just overall is
a failure in his own life. He managed to find happiness in Mrs. Das because she
made him feel important and was genuinely nice to him. They revolved their
happiness around one another to achieve the feeling that they are loved and
were not losing control of their own lives. The purpose of this work is to show
that how we perceive reality versus how the world works are very different and
that we can push our perceptions so far that we are blinded to the real world. This
type of thinking is prevalent in the modern world as many people like to base
their perception of reality and happiness on small things such as the options
of others. We as a people want to feel accepted so we seek out the approval of
our peers, even when in reality their opinions have no weight in the real world
