What Will Your Verse Be? Pub 5

Poetry can be used to convey a wide array of  emotions and situations in unique ways. The poems that we will be looking at in this paper all deal with love and heartbreak but it's interesting how each poet was able to convey the same theme in three different ways with the use of  different tones, analogies and settings.      In the poem "Footprint on Your Hear", by Gary Lenhart,  the speaker is taking about how there are certain people that will come into your life and "leave a footprint on your heart". They go on to compare this heartbreak to a harsh winter and use imagery to allow the reader to better understand what they are trying to say. They compare the process of letting go and moving on to that of taking off "encrusted boots, children’s mittens, Scratchy scarves" in the sense that we " linger to unwrap or ready yourself for rough exits". The speaker in this poem seems to have recently gone through heartbreak and is having a ...

Ocean ( Original Poem)

Image
Love is like an ocean, it is mysterious and deep. At first it feels cold and unforgiving but the deeper you go the warmer and more comforting it becomes. I never thought I would experience this feeling But then I saw you I felt as if I had gazed upon a beautiful ocean as the sun sets, but this was all an illusion. The harsh waves crashed onto the beach destroying, not caring who or what was in its way. the waves were fierce, crashing upon the rocks. After this brutal and unforgiving storm. The waves receded Everything was calm but now Now I have a fear of the ocean.

What It Means To Be Equal

Image
All throughout history mankind has been fighting for some form of equality and it's safe to say that this fight is still something that is going on today. Whether it be a fight for equality among genders, races, religions, etc. In Prof. Brady's lectures on equality she talked about how oppression affects the human experience and how this drove some people to cope with this unjust treatment by writing how they experience that time period.  With the story "White Woman of Color", by Alvarez, we learn about the affects of racism not only in America but also in the Dominican Republic and how this sort of inequality can affect children. Along with looking at works such as "White Woman of Color" Prof Brady gave us the opportunity to voice our own opinions on the struggle for equality. It was interesting to here everyone's opinions and personal experiences with inequalities. I personal believe that for the most part we are equal here in America. Yes, I do unders...

My Reflection

In the beginning of the semester I wasn't sure what to expect from this class. I had heard good things about Prof Brady before hand, which eased some of my concerns and it didn't hurt that I knew some people in my class already. Despite all of this on the first day of class I was extremely anxious, especially when I found out that I had to do presentations, but from the moment Prof Brady spoke I was able to relax. She was very understanding and an overall caring person, not only to me but to everyone in the class. She went out of her way to make everything she taught and assigned was understood by everyone and was willing to even help with the process of completing assignments.     As the semester progress I found it easier to open up and share my opinions in class. I won't deny that I had days where anxiety got the better of me but thankfully Prof. Brady was more than willing to try and help me and just be overall encouraging. Along with my confidence in myself...

The Things We Do For Love

Image
When we hear the word "love" we usually think of romantic of familial love. What most people fail to realize is that these are only but two forms out of many versions of love.  When we discussed love in class it was not in one particular lecture but instead spanned the course of a few lectures. The first time we discussed love was in the equality lecture and more specifically when we read "Children of the Sea", by  Edwidge Danticat.  The way we learned about the many facets of love such as love's compromise, heartbreak, and even hatred. Love is more than romance and it takes that understanding to truly appreciate true love and all it's hardships

We are all transcendentalists! ( Lecture Response)

Image
Prof. Brady really let her creative side show when she had class outside by the fountain and enjoy the sun rather than sit in a small classroom. This small detail was her way of subtly giving us a first hand experience with being transcendental without even realizing it. With this lesson we were, in a sense, forced to question the perfections, or lack thereof,  of the world and really appreciate the beauty of nature. The works that she paired with this lesson such as "The Interpreter of Maladies," by Jhumpa Lahiri, and “The Birthmark”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, were interesting examples of how our personal views of perfection can affect our daily lives and how we interact with other along with how we view ourselves.
